Ketubahs
What
is a ketubah? THE KETUBAH - the marriage
contract - was introduced into the Jewish wedding ceremony
approximately 2,500 years ago. It was written in Aramaic,
the spoken language of the Jews of the time, so that everyone
would understand the contract. To this day Aramaic has remained
the language of the traditional Ketubah . In the contract,
the husband undertakes to honor, support and maintain his
wife, and to live with her in affection and amity. He also
states what she will receive in the event of divorce or of
his death. The ketubah was developed to protect the Jewish
wife and to ensure her future.
Although
the traditional text has undergone little change through the
centuries, couples today often prefer that the text portray
their own spirituality. Many ketubot are available with a
variety of texts from the traditional to the modern, to allow
you to choose both a design and a text that best reflects
your ideas and beliefs.
How do I choose a ketubah?
Decide on the text you want for
your ketubah. In most cases, an orthodox ceremony will require
the traditional Aramaic text; a conservative ceremony will
require the Lieberman clause; and a reform ceremony will use
an egalitarian text. Other texts such as interfaith and gender
neutral are sometimes available. In most cases the English
text does not translate the Hebrew text. It is always best
to check with your rabbi or officiant before ordering the
ketubah.
Decide on the ketubah you want and be sure the text is available.
You may use our search tool to find available texts. If it
is not, there is always the option of ordering a blank ketubah
and having the text calligraphied by the artist although this
adds between $100-400 to the price. Remember also that most
artists can do an original ketubah for you but this takes
several months.
What is personalization? Personalization means that the artist or calligrapher
fills in your personal infomration including names, dates
and places. If you choose to have the ketubah personalized
by the artist, print out the personalization form found on
the left under Forms. The advantage of doing this is that
it will be in the artist's hand and if a mistake is made in
the calligraphy it is the responsibility of the artist. If
someone else does the calligraphy and makes a mistake you
will need to purchase a new ketubah.
For a personalized ketubah we need the
form faxed and mailed to us. Please print clearly. If you
cannot write in Hebrew we will transliterate from the English.
When the parents' names are asked for
you only need the first name (e.g., Moshe Aaron) not their
parents' name (e.g., Moshe Aaron ben Zalmon v Mira). Your
Hebrew name will be your name (e.g., Mira) son or daughter
of your mother and father (e.g., bat Sara v Avraham). Most
converts take the parents' name as Sara and Abraham.
It is important to know if the English wedding date is before
or after sundown. A ketubah will not be written if the ceremony
takes place on Shabbat. However, since Shabbat ends at sundown
a Saturday wedding after sundown is okay because it is actually
Sunday on the Hebrew calendar.
Please try to allow at least two weeks (four-six is ideal)
for a personalized ketubah. You want the time to leisurely
look over your ketubah to be sure everything is as you want
it. Some artists charge a rush fee if the have less
than three weeks.
You are making a lifetime purchase of
an important document and piece of art. Please, do not hesitate
to call us with any questions you might have. We are happy
to help!
Translation of Orthodox Text
Translation of the Orthodox Ketubah text
On the ______day of the week, the _________day of the month
______ in the year five thousand seven hundred and ______
since the creation of the world, the era according to which
we reckon here in the city of _________________ that ________
son of _________ said to this (virgin) _________daughter of
_____. "Be my wife according to the practice of Moses
and Israel, and I will cherish, honor, support and maintain
you in accordance with the custom of Jewish husbands who cherish,
honor, support and maintain their wives faithfully. And I
here present you with the marriage gift of (virgins), (two
hundred) silver zuzim, which belongs to you, according the
the law of Moses and Israel; and I will also give you your
food, clothing and necessities, and live with you as husband
and wife according to universal custom." And Miss_____,
this (virgin) consented and became his wife. The trousseau
that she brought to him from her (father's) house in silver,
gold, valuables, clothing, furniture and bedclothes, all this
________, the said bridegroom accepted in the sum of (one
hundred ) silver pieces, and ______ the bridegroom, consented
to increase this amount from his own property with the sum
of (one hundred) silver pieces, making in all (two hundred)
silver pieces. And thus said __________, the bridegroom: "The
responsibility of this marriage contract, of this trousseau,
and of this additional sum, I take upon myself and my heirs
after me, so that they shall be paid from the best part of
my property and possession that I have beneath the whole heaven,
that which I now possess or may hereafter acquire. All my
property, real and personal, even the shirt from my back,
shall be mortgaged to secure the payment of this marriage
contract, of the trousseau, and of the addition made to it,
during my lifetime and after my death, from the present day
and forever." _______, the bridegroom, has taken upon
himself the responsibility of this marriage contract, of the
trousseau and the additon made to it, according to the restrictive
usages of all marriage contracts and the additons to them
made for the daughters of Israel, according to the institution
of our sages of blessed memory. It is not to be regarded as
a mere forfeiture without consideration or as a mere formula
of a document. We have followed the legal formality of symbolic
delivery (kinyan) between ______the son of _______, the bridegroom
and _______ the daughter of _______ this (virgin), and we
have used a garment legally fit for the purpose, to strengthen
all that is stated above, and everything is valid and confirmed.
Translation of Conservative Text with Lieberman Clause
The Conservative Text uses the same text as the Orthodox
(as shown above), but adds at the end a paragraph known as
the "Lieberman Clause". This additional clause translates
as:
And both together agreed that if this marriage shall ever
be dissolved under civil law, then either husband or wife
may invoke the authority of the Beth Din of the Rabbinical
Assembly and the Jewish Theological Seminary of America or
its duly authorized representatives, to decide what action
by either spouse is then appropriate under Jewish matrimonial
law; and if either spouse shall fail to honor the demand of
the other or to carry out the decision of the Beth Din or
its representative, then the other spouse may invoke any and
all remedies available in civil law and equity to enforce
compliance with the Beth Din's decision and this solemn abligaton.
How long does it take to get a ketubah?
If you are ordering a non-personalized ketubah we can get
it to you within a week or even overnight.
We prefer to have three weeks or more for a personalized ketubah
so you have time to go over it before your wedding. Time of
delivery is really very dependent on the individual artist.
With today's fast delivery services we can get things to you
very quickly if you are willing to pay the rush fees.
How should we handle the ketubah
during the ceremony? Since the ketubah is actually read
during the ceremony, many couples like to display it on an
easel. We recommend that you bring the ketubah to a framer
and ask them to mat it for you. Ask the framer to place a
sheet of acetate over the ketubah to protect it from dirty
hands and flying bits of spit. The matted ketubah can be placed
on an easel during the ceremony and reception to add a splash
of color and tradition. You can complete the framing process
after the ceremony.
What type of pen should be used to
sign the ketubah?
You can use any pen with indelible ink. We strongly discourage
the use of fancy fountain or ink pens since these tend to
leak, especially when people are not used to writing with
them. We have seen horrible ink accidents. Choose a trusty
medium ball point pen (any color, although many couples prefer
black) to give the ketubah the look of a signed document,
which is what it is.
